Very few of the portraits of George Washington were commissioned by him or members of his family. Instead, the requests for sittings came from his admirers and from the artists who hoped to satisfy the growing demand for his image during his lifetime. Ellen G. Miles, curator emerita of painting and sculpture, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, examines the relationship between George Washington and the artists who painted, sculpted, and drew his portraits, as well as the reasons these portraits were created.

The lecture will last approximately 45 minutes with time for questions at the end.
